City transformation as a driving force of African Progress: The Experience from Addis Ababa Addis Ababa hosted the 2026 African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) Reunion this week.
The city has shared its experiences in various developmental interventions. The city has demonstrated its undivided attention for Early Childhood Development (ECD) for the mayors and governors during the field visits.
As Mayor Adanech Abiebie underscored during the opening of the reunion, Addis Ababa has integrated the thought of Medemer Government in its human-centered developmental interventions. As a result, the city has achieved direct and equitable benefit of its residents through which changes in the everyday life of the people is being witnessed.
The main objective behind AMALI is creating a supportive condition for realizing rapid development African cities. Addis Ababa’s sustainable human centered development has shown the possibility of transforming a vision into tangible results.
Addis Ababa has dedicated its resources to bring about changes in the city’s economic structure. The city has continued working to a better end of holistic development and prosperity. Accordingly, the city is now on a reliable track of becoming modern, all-centered and culturally developed city.
Partnership among African City Centers (ACC), Big Win Philanthropy and Bloomberg Philanthropy has created an opportunity to observe the changes and transformations across Africa. The partnership has created an experience sharing platform that indicates how city developments help transform the urban livelihood. The experience presents a valuable lesson which states plan should not be paper tiger but rather something seen as a change in the lives of the people.
Addis Ababa’s transformation is a vital lesson for African cities. With a consorted effort of change oriented and visionary political leadership, cities can alter their potentials into tangible results. The lesson further indicates that strong leadership plays prominent role in accelerating city transformation and creating a better life for the people.
